- So long, Chicago. After spending most of June visiting with family and friends, itās time for the next leg of our summer travels. Itās certainly been a whirlwind few weeks. While Chicago remains my favorite summer city, itāll be nice to have a more relaxed environment for the coming month. I guess Iām grateful to have way fewer friends out east!
- Does air travel feel busier than ever? It certainly feels that way with full flights and airport delays. One recent anecdote I heard from a friend who works as a commercial pilot for a large airline: his phone rings off the hook with robocalls begging him to pick up shifts. He mostly doesnāt, and they often cancel the flights for lack of staff. It might come as a surprise, but if you look at official data for revenue passenger miles and TSA checkpoint numbers, youāll see travel remains below 2019 highs. Is it overly simplistic to blame this on staffing issues?

The anxiety of influencers. Writing for Harperās Magazine, Barrett Swanson spent a few days in a Los Angeles mansion for TIkTok influencers called Clubhouse For the Boys. āAlso known as content houses or TikTok mansions, collab houses are grotesquely lavish abodes where teens and early twentysomethings live and work together, trying to achieve viral fame on a variety of media platforms.ā | learn more

The origin: why Porsche announced an SUV in 1998. A history lesson! āAt the company, the Cayenne was quickly accepted. But the Porsche clubs were less enthusiastic. There were some strong headwinds,..ā | learn more

Worldās largest cruise ship headed straight from shipyard to junkyard. āIn a bleak financial and maritime saga, the nearly-completed mega cruise ship Global Dream II will never take to the high seas, and instead will be scrapped ā because its builder ran out of cash, and no one wants to buy it,ā | learn more

Whatās up with Austin? I found myself agreeing with many points from this post. The quick summary: āAustin is a mediocre city, but a great place to live. ⦠Just about everything is a 7/10. The food, the weather, the music, the sports, the nature, the comedy. Itās pretty good in almost every category.ā | learn more

How Appleās thoughtful, measured approach is building a revolution in health. āAppleās health efforts have evolved from a subset of one among many of a single ancillary deviceās features, into something that spans the companyās entire product ecosystem, and that both informs and welcomes collaboration from healthcare practitioners and researchers globally.ā | learn more

Do 100 million people in the U.S. live with medical debt? Thatās the headline, but their methodology is not totally convincing. What is apparent, though, is that the number is extremely high. āTo calculate the true extent and burden of this debt, the KHN-NPR investigation draws on a nationwide poll conducted by KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation) for this project. The poll was designed to capture not just bills patients couldnāt afford, but other borrowing used to pay for health care as well.ā | learn more

The meltdown of Cerebral, the āhackā to get Adderall. This company was a high-flyer, raising over $400 million within 2 years of its founding. They found a huge market demand for Adderall (duh?) and went after it. Then things turned ugly. | learn more

Health and finance influencers in China now need certification. Given how easily terrible ideas spread online, I think this is a solid pro-consumer move. āPlatform operators should be responsible for reviewing broadcastersā certifications and subsequently putting the relevant information in the official records. Artificial intelligence-synthesized presenters and content are subject to the same set of requirements as human broadcasters, the rules say.ā | learn more

Five myths about retail media networks (RMNs). This is a McKinsey post about the advertising businesses built on top of major retailers. Considering Amazonās ad side hustle is a $30B+ business already, Iām surprised I hadnāt heard the term RMN before. | learn more

How one parent will educate his children. āMy goal with the 12 points below is for [my son] Onyx to graduate with the ability to study, understand, and apply any skill he chooses. I believe this is the way to develop his confidence and self-esteem so that heās not prone to be swayed onto paths that arenāt true to his goals.ā | learn more

BlockFi secures $250 million bailout from FTX. Shortly before the Celsius freeze, I read that trading firm Alameda Research pulled out of a 50k ETH position that led to the ārun on the bank.ā The founder of Alameda Research is also the founder of FTX, which has tossed now a lifeline to competitor BlockFi. This reminds me of Lehman Brothers failing then Bear Stearns getting a government bailout. | learn more
